Choosing a Flooring Contractor in Arlington, VA Who Reads the Subfloor First

Arlington’s housing stock spans about a century. The Maywood historic district alone holds houses built between 1909 and 1941, including Sears Roebuck and Aladdin kit homes, and the corridor neighborhoods behind Rosslyn and Ballston kept filling in for decades after that.

That range matters more than most homeowners expect. A 1930s bungalow usually has narrow-strip oak over plank subfloor with eighty years of settling in it. A 2010s condo has a concrete deck, a building with delivery hours, and a sound rating to hit.

We’re Stair Creations & Flooring, run by Carlos and Alice, and we handle both.

Our crews install hardwood and vinyl plank, refinish floors that are worth saving, and do the stairs that connect them, all in house.

Every project we take on starts with a look at what’s actually under the existing floor. Sometimes that means we recommend a sand and refinish and save you the cost of new material. Sometimes it means we flag a subfloor problem before it becomes a hollow spot you hear every morning.

What Arlington Clients Tell Us Afterward

The comment we hear most often is that the new floor made rooms feel bigger than the furniture ever did.

Stair Creations remodeled our staircase and top-level catwalk. We were able to keep our red oak staircase (saving money) and upgrade the railing components to create the modern look we desired.

As with many projects, we had to adjust some things along the way and they were flexible and accommodating. Their custom approach to our project allowed us to achieve our vision. The craftsmanship is superior. One example, they cut off the original stair nosing and replaced it with a different profile nosing.

With the flooring, we supplied a picture of what we wanted and they were able to achieve it. Their work transformed these areas from ordinary to unforgettable. We plan to work with them again in the near future.

We recently replaced our flooring with engineered hardwood and wanted to update our steps. I came across Stair Creations and was blown away by how professional and courteous they were when I initially called.

They estimated the job with pictures, then came in to take actual measurements. They were knowledgeable, helped us by showing us pictures for inspiration, provided a realistic timeframe, and completed the job in about two weeks!

Carlos and his crews completed the work and matched it to my new flooring, repainted certain parts of the wall to match. It was like they were never there. If you are looking for a stair company that can handle the entire job (from start to finish) call them!

As a local Realtor in the DMV area, I’ll be recommending them to all my clients! Can’t say enough good things about Stair Creations! 11/10

So What Does an Arlington Floor Actually Run?

Pricing on our two most requested services is published and straightforward, because square footage does most of the math for you.

Refinishing an existing hardwood floor is quoted on an itemized proposal, since the condition of the boards, the number of coats, and the stain match all change the labor.

A 600 square foot main level in white oak, supplied and installed, sits inside that per-foot range once you pick the species and finish. We’ll put the actual number in writing before anything gets ordered.

How an Arlington Floor Job Runs

step 1 collaborate

1. The read

We walk the rooms, check the subfloor, measure, and talk through species, width, and finish against the trim and cabinets you already have.
Step 2 build

2. The Prep

Old flooring comes out, the subfloor gets flattened and fastened, and moisture gets checked before a single box is opened.

3. The Install and Finish

Boards go down, edges get scribed, and stain and sealer go on in controlled coats with low-VOC products.

4. The Walk

We go room by room with you, mark anything you want touched, and handle it before the crew leaves for good.

What Sets Our Crews Apart in Arlington

We are a single flooring company for the entire job, floors, stairs, and everything between:

One company, floors and stairs

Most Arlington jobs hit a staircase somewhere. We build, refinish, and rail stairs ourselves, so the transition between the floor and the first tread matches.

Bona Certified finishing

Our finishers are certified by Bona and we work with Rubio Monocoat, DuraSeal, and Mirage, so the stain match on a repair or an addition holds up next to the original.

Daily cleanup, on a schedule

Crews clean up between 3:00 and 5:00 PM so you get your evenings back while the job runs.

Warranty that covers the whole chain

When we supply the material, install it, stain it, and handle the touch-ups, the work carries our 5-Year Workmanship Warranty.

Health-conscious products

GREENGUARD-certified, low-VOC finishes mean the house stays livable during and after the install.

Arlington Flooring Questions We Get Asked

It depends on how much wear layer is left above the tongue. We check thickness at a few spots and in a doorway before recommending either path. Plenty of Arlington floors from the 1940s still have several sandings in them.
Straight flooring replacement typically doesn’t. Structural changes, basement finishing, and anything touching electrical or plumbing usually do. Arlington’s Inspection Services Division offers free code consultations to permit applicants if you want to confirm your scope.
A single-level install usually runs a few days. Refinishing adds cure time between coats. We give you a room-by-room sequence up front so you know which spaces you can use each night.
Usually, yes. Matching involves species, cut, board width, and stain, and we’ll bring samples to lay against your existing boards before committing.
It’s the product we recommend most often for below-grade rooms, because it tolerates the moisture swings a concrete slab produces. The slab still gets tested first.
We can. It’s billed at $175 per hour for a two-person crew, and plenty of clients handle the small stuff themselves and leave us the heavy pieces.

Wood Floors Age Well When the Subfloor Was Done Right

(takes 1-2 min)

Arlington is the smallest self-governing county in the country, and it packs a full century of building into that footprint. Neighborhoods like Cherrydale and Maywood hold pre-war houses with original wood under decades of carpet, while the Rosslyn to Ballston corridor keeps adding buildings with concrete decks and sound requirements. Both are good candidates for the work we do, for opposite reasons. Visitors get a sense of the mix through Arlington’s visitor guide, and homeowners planning bigger renovations can start with Arlington County’s own resources before scheduling anything.
