Your staircase gets walked on more than any floor in the house and looked at by everyone who comes through the door, which is why worn treads, a wobbly banister, or decades-old carpet drag down the whole space.
A stair remodel fixes all of it at once. We remove the old carpet, build in solid wood treads and clean risers, rework or replace the railing and newel posts, and finish everything to match the floors it connects to.
We are Stair Creations, a full in-house crew that remodels stairs across Northern Virginia, and it is the core of what we do. The same team measures, builds, installs, and finishes, so your project never gets passed between a carpenter, a railing company, and a finisher who never talk to each other.
Every finish we use is water-based and low-VOC, so the house stays livable while we work, and we clean the site at the end of each day.
When the last coat has cured and the railing is solid under your hand, you get a staircase that makes the entire entry feel finished, and a first impression you are proud of every time the door opens.

What a Stair Remodel Can Include

Signs Your Staircase Is Ready for a Remodel
- Worn or squeaky treads. Steps that dip, creak, or show bare patches where the carpet has worn through.
- Dated stair carpet. Old carpet that traps dust, hides the wood, and dates the whole entry.
- A wobbly railing or banister. A handrail that shifts when you lean on it is both an eyesore and a safety issue.
- Big gaps and loose trim. Separating treads, a big gap at the wall, and trim that has pulled away over the years.
- A scuffed, uneven finish. Old stain worn thin down the middle of every step.
- A style that no longer fits. Heavy, dark spindles and dated posts that clash with a home you have since updated.
Ways to Modernize Your Staircase
- Solid wood treads with painted risers. The classic two-tone look, stained oak or walnut treads over crisp white risers.
- Wrought iron balusters. Swapping bulky wood spindles for slim iron instantly reads current and opens up the sightline.
- A statement newel post. A clean box newel or a sleek metal post resets the whole character of the stairs.
- Open or floating risers. Removing risers for an airier, contemporary staircase where the structure allows.
- Refinished handrails. Sanding a dated handrail back and restaining it in a richer, warmer tone.
- Stairs matched to your floors. Running the same species and stain up the stairs as the floor below, so the two read as one.

Stair Creations remodeled our staircase and top-level catwalk. We were able to keep our red oak staircase (saving money) and upgrade the railing components to create the modern look we desired.
As with many projects, we had to adjust some things along the way and they were flexible and accommodating. Their custom approach to our project allowed us to achieve our vision. The craftsmanship is superior.
One example, they cut off the original stair nosing and replaced it with a different profile nosing. With the flooring, we supplied a picture of what we wanted and they were able to achieve it. Their work transformed these areas from ordinary to unforgettable. We plan to work with them again in the near future.

Stair Creations was an EXCELLENT company to deal with and they turned our stairs from drab to fab. They were fast, courteous and created the staircase of our dreams. I absolutely would use them again if we decide to do our stairs to the basement as well.

Common Questions About Stair Remodels
It runs in a clear order. We start by removing the old carpet and any worn treads and risers, then we measure each step, since no two are ever perfectly square. Each solid wood tread is cut to the correct length and angle, scored with a box cutter or run through the saw for a clean edge, then we drill and screw it down into the stringer, or nail it where that holds better, so nothing shifts or squeaks.
We set the new risers, mount the railing and newel posts into the studs behind the drywall, and fill every hole and gap. From there it is careful sanding, staining or painting, and sealing, usually two coats, with the last coat as the final step before we hand it back.
