Stair Design in Alexandria, VA
Most people spend more time choosing a couch than they do planning their staircase, which is a shame, because the stairs are what everyone sees the moment they walk in.

What Ten Years of Stair Design in Alexandria, VA Looks Like
Carlos started Stair Creations in 2014 after a lifetime in construction, and the business has completed over 800 stair and railing projects across the area since then. That track record isn’t accidental.
What actually separates Stair Creations from the competition is the way the whole process is built. You get a proper design consultation, material guidance, and, when you need it, a full 3D rendering before anything is ordered or installed. Most stair companies skip that entirely. Stair Creations made it standard because a surprised client at the end of a job is a failure, not a feature.
Most stair companies install and leave. Stair Creations handles the staining, finishing, and painting too, so nothing falls through the cracks between contractors.

What Stair Design Actually Costs in Alexandria, VA
Projects range from around $3,000 for a focused railing update to upwards of $20,000 for a full custom staircase with premium materials and detailed finishing. All figures below come from past project estimates. Your project will land somewhere based on its own specifics, so contact us with the details and we’ll give you a real number.
What moves the price:
- Materials: Oak, maple, white oak, black iron. Every choice pulls the number in a different direction, and we'll help you find what fits both your taste and your budget.
- Size and complexity: A straight staircase and a floating open-riser design are two very different scopes of work. More steps, more turns, more detail means more time and more material.
- Finishing: Staining, painting, and sealing are what take a staircase from installed to finished. The finish you choose affects both the timeline and the cost.
- Renderings: If you come in without a clear vision, a 3D rendering is often the most useful thing we can do early on. It costs something, and it saves a lot of confusion later.
- Existing structure: Sometimes what's underneath the current staircase needs work before anything new goes in. We assess this upfront so there are no surprises.
On Budget, On Time, No Surprises
We know construction has a reputation. Projects run long, costs creep up, and suddenly your home feels like a job site with no end in sight. That’s not how Stair Creations operates.

Your Questions, Answered
Railing updates typically wrap in three to four days. Full hardwood stair installations average around six. We’ll give you a clear timeline during the consultation, before any work starts, so you can plan around it.
That’s more common than you’d think, and it’s exactly what the design consultation is for. Around 40% of our clients arrive without a clear vision. We walk you through the catalog, show you the portfolio, and use 3D renderings when needed. You’ll leave that first conversation with a direction.
Everything we touch. Installation, staining, finishing, touch-up work. If Stair Creations did it, it’s covered for five years. If another contractor handles the staining on a project we installed, we cover our work only. Clean and simple.
There is a consultation fee for the on-site visit. If you move forward with us, it gets credited toward the final project cost. It’s how we make sure every proposal we put together is actually worth something to you.
